独立不定詞とは
独立不定詞は不定詞を含んだ慣用表現で、文章全体を修飾するものです。文頭に置かれたることが多いですが、文中や文末でも用いられることもあります。
よく出る独立不定詞一覧
独立不定詞には次のようなものがあります。（最低限、太字のものは覚えておくと良いです。）
- to tell the truth（実を言うと）
- so to speak（いわば）
- needless to say（言うまでもなく）
- to say nothing of ～（～は言うまでもなく）
- strange to say（奇妙なことに）
- not to say ～ （～とは言えないまでも）
- to be frank（with you）（率直に言うと）
- to be sure（確かに）
- to be brief（要するに）
- to be fair（公平を期するために言うと）
- to begin with , to start with（まず第一に、そもそも）
- to make matters worse（いっそう悪いことには）
- to do a person justice（<人＞について公平に言えば）
- to put it briefly（手短に言うと）
- not to change the subject, but … （話がそれるけど…）
上のものを見てわかるように、「言う」の意味になる動詞（say, tell, speakなど）を用いた独立不定詞が多いです。
独立不定詞を使った例文
- To tell the truth, I don’t know him very well.（実を言うと彼とはそんなに仲良くないんだ。）
- Tama is, so to speak, a member of our family.（タマはいわば私たち家族の一員です。）
so to speak（いわば）は as it were, that is to say などを使って書き換えることができます。
- Needless to say, he lost the game.（言うまでもなく、彼は試合に負けた。）
needless to say は of course, naturally などを使って書き換えることができます。
- She can speak French, to say nothing of English.（彼女は英語は言うまでもなく、フランス語も話せる。）
- Strange to say, he the door was left open.（奇妙なことに、ドアが開けっぱなしだった。）
- To be frank with you, I don’t like action movies.（率直に言うと、アクション映画は好きではありません。）
- To begin with, I’ll introduce a new products.（まず初めに新製品を紹介しましょう。）
to begin with は to start with, first of all などを使って書き換えることができます。
- To make matters worse, she dumped me.（さらに悪いことに、彼女にフラれた。）
