無生物主語構文とは
無生物主語構文は人以外のものが主語になっている文です。例えば下のような英文が無生物主語構文です。
This medicine relieve your headache.
（この薬があなたの頭痛を和らげます。）
上の例文は他動詞を伴うSVOの第3文型ですが、O（= your headache ）を主語に、S（= This medicine）を副詞節のように訳すとより自然な文になります。
This medicine relieve your headache.
（この薬があなたの頭痛を和らげます。→ この薬を飲めば頭痛が和らぎます。）
目的語を伴う無生物主語構文では主語が原因や条件・時の副詞節のように訳され、目的語を主語として訳すとより自然な日本文になることが多いです。
この無生物主語独特の訳し方、書き換えがよく問われます。

無生物主語構文の訳し方と書き換えのパターンを確認します。よくあるのが「原因・理由」「条件・方法・手段」「時」の3パターンです。
原因・理由
無生物主語構文をbecauseを使って書き換えることがあります。（その他にas, sinceも。）
The injury deprived me of my freedom to act.
（そのけがのせいで私は自由に行動できなかった。）
→ I couldn’t act freely because I had the injury.
→ I couldn’t act freely because of the injury.
「What makes ＋目的語＋動詞の原形～?」も理由を問う無生物主語構文ですが、疑問文ですのでWhyを使って書き換えることができます。
What made you think so?
（どうしてそう思ったのですか。／何があなたをそう思わせたのですか）
→ Why did you think so?
あることが原因で「いいこと」があったときは、thanks to ～（～のおかげで）を用いて書き換えることができます。
The good weather allowed me to go out.
いい天気のおかげで外出できました。
→ I could go out thanks to the good weather.
条件・方法・手段
無生物主語構文をifを使って書き換えることがあります。
A few minutes’ walk bring you to the station.
（2，3分歩けば駅に着きます。）
→ If you walk for a few minutes, you will get to the station.

無生物主語構文をwhenを用いて書き換えることがあります。
The news surprised me.
（そのニュースを聞いて驚きました。）
→ When I heard the news, I was surprised.
無生物主語でよく使われる動詞
無生物主語では次のような動詞がよく使われます。
- 「～させる」系 … make, cause+人+to, force+人+to, enable+人+to, (許可) allow+人+to, (回想) remind+人+of
- 「～させない」系 … keep+人+from prevent+人+from, rob+人+of, deprive+人+of
- 「伝える」系 … tell, show, say
- 「時間・お金などの犠牲」系 … take+人+to, bring+人+to, cost, save, find
- 「感情」系 … satisfy, surprise
