動名詞を用いたさまざまな慣用表現を紹介します。

feel like 〜ing

feel like 〜ingで「~したい気分だ」の意味を表します。

  • I feel like eating sushi.
    (寿司を食べたい気分だ。)
  • I don’t feel like sleeping tonight.
    (今夜は眠る気分じゃない。)

cannot help 〜ing

cannot help 〜ingで「~せずにいられない」の意味になります。

  • I cannot help loving her.
    (彼女を愛さずにはいられない。)
  • We couldn’t help laughing at his jokes.
    (私たちは彼のジョークに笑わずにはいられなかった。)

keep/prevent/stop 目的語 from 〜ing

keep/prevent/stop 目的語 from 〜ing で「…が~するのを防ぐ、妨げる」の意味を表します。

  • Keep the water from boiling over.
    (水を沸騰してこぼさないようにしてください。)
  • What prevented you from coming earlier?
    (何があなたがもっと早く来ることを妨げたのか。→ どうしてもっと早く来られなかったの。)

never do without 〜ing で「…すれば必ずする」の意味を表します。

  • We never meet without quarreling.
    (我々は会えば必ず口論になる。)
  • She never watch the movies without crying.
    (彼女はその映画を見ると必ず泣く。)

How about 〜ing?

How about 〜ing? で「~するのはどうですかの意味を表します。Let’s ~./Shall we ~?/Why don’t we ~?などで書き換えられます。

    (映画に行くのはどう?)

    (休憩しませんか。)

be worth 〜ing

be worth 〜ing で「~する価値がある」の意味を表します。

  • The exhibition is worth seeing.
    (その展覧会は見る価値があります。)
  • Kyoto is a city worth visiting.
    (京都は訪れる価値のある街です。)

be busy (in) 〜ing

be busy (in) 〜ing で「~するのに忙しい」の意味を表します。(in は口語ではあまり使われていません。)

  • She was busy hosting the party yesterday.
    (彼女は昨日パーティーでホストを務めるのに忙しかった。)
  • He is busy writing articles.
    (彼は記事を書くのに忙しい。)

It is no use/good 〜ing

It is no use/good 〜ing で「~してもむだだ」の意味を表します。

  • It is no use crying over spilt milk.
    (こぼれたミルクを嘆いてもむだだ⇒覆水盆に返らず[ことわざ])
  • It is no good my talking to him.
    (私が彼に話してもむだだ。)

There is no use 〜ing

There is no use 〜ing で「~してもむだだ」の意味を表します。

  • There is no use discussing the matter farther.
    (その問題についてこれ以上議論してもむだだ。)
  • There is no use waiting for her.
    (彼女を待ってもむだなことだ。)

There is no 〜ing

There is no 〜ing は「~できない」の意味を表します。We cannot ~/It is impossible などで書き換えられます。

  • There is no telling[saying/knowing] what will happen in the future.
    (将来何が起こるかはわからない。)
  • There is no accounting for tastes.
    (人の好みは説明できない → たで食う虫も好き好き[ことわざ])

It goes without saying that・・・

It goes without saying that・・・ で「・・・なのは言うまでもない」の意味を表します。

  • It goes without saying that he is an excellent pianist.
    (彼がすばらしいピアニストであることは言うまでもありません。)
  • It goes without saying that health is above wealth.
    (健康が富に勝るのは言うまでもありません。)

be used to 〜ing / get used to 〜ing

be used to 〜ing で「~するのに慣れている」、get used to ~ing だと「~するのに慣れる」の意味になります。助動詞のused to(以前~したものだった)の後は動詞の原形。

  • I am used to walking long distances.
    (私は長距離を歩くのに慣れている。)
  • I got used to driving a manual car.
    (マニュアル車の運転に慣れた。)

look forward to 〜ing

look forward to 〜ing で「~するのを楽しみにしています」の意味を表します。このtoは不定詞ではないので注意。

  • I look forward to seeing you again.
    (また会えるのを楽しみにしています。)
  • I’m looking forward to meeting you.
    (あなたに会うのを楽しみにしています。)

on 〜ing

on 〜ing で「~するとすぐに」の意味を表します。(As soon as 主語+動詞で書き換えられます。)

  • On hearing the news, he turned pale.
    (その知らせを聞くとすぐに、彼は青ざめた。)
  • On arriving at the station, I called him.
    (駅に着くとすぐに彼に電話した。)

in ~ing

in ~ingで「~する時に、している間に」の意味になります。

You should be careful in crossing the road.
(道を渡るときは気をつけた方がいいよ。)
